Screen Recorders Overview + Komodo Decks v. Loom Review

What are screen recorders?

A screen recorder is a software tool that captures everything happening on your computer or device screen. It records activities such as navigating websites, using apps, or explaining processes, and saves them as video files. Screen recorders typically also include audio recording (both from the system and microphone) and sometimes webcam footage.

Why use a screen recorder?

There are many benefits to using a screen recorder in your business or personal life. Screen recorders can help to:

  • Save Time: Talking & “showing” is faster and clearer than writing long emails or instructions.

  • Explain Complex Ideas: It’s much easier to explain complex ideas by demonstrating what you mean.

  • Enhance Learning: The majority of people are visual learners (versus auditory learners) so, this makes it much easier to follow and implement new information.

  • Reduce Miscommunication: How many times has an email or text been misunderstood? Someone being able to hear your voice, your tone, your inflection makes it much less likely for someone to misinterpret a message.

  • Add a Personal Touch: In an ever expanding digital world it’s harder to connect with people - screen recording (with or without you on camera) helps to bridge that gap.

  • Provide Documentation: Screen recordings create a visual archive of processes that can be revisited as needed. This ensures everyone has access to the same instructions so.

Ways you can use a screen recorder in your business

  • Record “how to” videos to demonstrate a task

  • Send a personal message to a client to welcome them or thank them for their business

  • Share feedback on a work completed (e.g., design or documents)

  • Create SOPs or guides to help with onboarding or ongoing training

  • Send updates to clients walking them through project updates or changes

  • Record content for courses, blogs, product reviews, etc.

Loom vs. Komodo Decks

I wanted to make a quick comparison chart of these two platforms. Loom is arguably the most widely known screen recording tool. I myself have used it since day 1 in my business and had no idea there was a (IMO, better) alternative option. While this chart is not all encompassing I tried to pick out the features that converted me to a Komodo Decks fan over Loom. There are many more features available these platforms with regards to video editing, viewer insights & analytics, transcripts and captions, collaborative features for commenting and feedback, custom branding, password protection & privacy settings, and more. You can check out both of their websites for more details about those features and what's included in their plan options.

Komodo Decks Demo

I made a quick video to show what it looks like inside of Komodo Decks. You can check out the video here. I currently use the starter version, but will be upgrading to the professional plan soon and then will be able to embed the video right here on my blog!

This is a screenshot of what the recordings page looks like in Komodo Decks. As you can see on the right hand side it automatically generates a summary, chapters, identifies action items, and tags. Each of these sections is editable to adjust for your needs.

Below the video you can see the options for editing, using the page builder, adding a call to action (locked as I'm currently on the starter plan) and to view analytics.

Final Thoughts

If you’re not already using a screen recording tool in your business (or are and intrigued by Komodo Decks!) I highly recommend checking out your options. To me the choice is a no brainer as the features and options within Komodo Decks are similar, if not better and the price can’t be beat. Check it out and let me know if you have any questions!
